Only approximately 1,300 Livingstone’s fruit bats (Pteropus livingstonii) can be found living in the wild on the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli in the Indian Ocean. Livingstone’s fruit bats are important pollinators and seed dispersers among the islands’ lush vegetation.

Bats range greatly in size. The largest bat – the giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus) — has a six-foot wingspan. The smallest bat — Kitti’s hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyi) — has only a six-inch wingspan.
